Golf Communities Make Jackson County, North Carolina a “Hole In One” for Southern Golfers

Home to the historic village of Cashiers, Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s offices and Silver Creek founder, Jochen Lucke – Jackson County is also home to a veritable treasure trove of award-winning golf courses and prestigious golf course communities. Jochen has enjoyed practicing his swing on more than one of the following courses almost as much as he has enjoyed introducing new families to the distinctive communities that surround them. “Cashiers and, more specifically, Jackson County are filled with beautiful mountain courses where the games are challenging and the views are breathtaking.  Many of these courses are so renowned, they draw professional golfers from all over the country,” explains Jochen. “The best part is, a handful of these golf courses are part of larger communities featuring gorgeous new construction homes, classic mountain estates and an abundance of other amenities to please all members of the family. Avid golfers will feel as though they’ve died and gone to Heaven when they step onto their back deck overlooking the golf course and watch the sunrise over the mountains. As a major golf lover myself, it simply doesn’t get any better than this!”

Wade Hampton Golf Course

A striking centerpiece to the upscale community of Wade Hampton Golf Club, the prestigious private club’s Tom Fazio-designed championship golf course presents its players with 18 holes that test even the most skilled golfer and awe-inspiring vistas at every turn. The course has received national attention through such high profile magazines as GolfWeek Magazine and Golf Digest Magazine. In 2007, Wade Hampton was recognized as the highest ranked course in all of North Carolina in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.” More recently, the course received the #1 ranking in GolfWeek for “Best Residential Golf Course” in 2009, ranked #54 of the Top 100 Courses in the World, and was hailed as “an obvious work of art…in an idyllic setting” in Links Magazine.  If you are fortunate enough to have an opportunity to play this course, you definitely should!

Why just play when you could literally LIVE the game?  There are several distinctive communities in Jackson County which offer golf course home sites and estates nestled right alongside the links. Imagine how great your swing will be when you have a golf course in your backyard!

Mountain Top Golf and Lake Club is perched high atop a beautiful expanse of the Blue Ridge Mountains between the popular destinations of Cashiers and Highlands, North Carolina. At 4,000 feet above sea level, Mountaintop offers its residents some of the most beautiful views in the region. Set upon a sprawling 731 acres, the developer – Discovery Land Company – has designed a luxury mountain retreat community of just 251 estate lots and 75 cabins and lodges peppered about the property. Lots range in size from one-half acre to five acres, providing residents with the peace and quiet that has become a trademark of luxury mountain living. First debuted in 2006, the community’s Tom Fazio-designed golf course offers 18 exciting holes featuring 7,100 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70 and truly spectacular panoramas.

Bear Lake Reserve marries the concepts of community, luxury, leisure and nature together with amazing results. The Bear Lake Golf Club features a 9-hole, par 29 course by Nicklaus Design with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and valley below.

The 2,000-acre mountain community of Chinquapin features homes designed to appear as one with the stunning natural landscape. Life at Chinquapin includes planned community activities, a regulation-length 9-hole walking golf course, fly fishing, riding club and the amazing Chinquapin Lodge. Residents of Chinquapin are also entitled to all the benefits of her sister property, Trillium Links & Lake Club.

Trillium’s award-winning 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Morris Hatalsky, is as challenging as it is beautiful. Clinics and private lessons are available with the full-time pro on site. The less challenging par three Garden Golf course is a terrific amenity the entire family can enjoy without the worry of tee times and scorecards. It is among the most exciting, family-friendly properties on beautiful Lake Glenville. Striking homes featuring Arts and Crafts and Adirondack style architecture line the community’s streets.

The celebrated Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove is a master-planned gated community houses 440 acres of some of Western North Carolina’s most stunning terrain. Whether you’re searching for the perfect home site to start building that dream home, or considering the easy maintenance of a luxury condominium, Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove may just be the answer.  Central to Old Edwards’ amenities are the superbly manicured par 71-championship courses of the Highland 9 and the Cove 9. PGA professional instructors are available for private lessons to help residents up their game.

In the popular family-friendly WNC town of Sapphire, the Country Club at Sapphire Valley offers a collection of golf club estates surrounding the 18-hole golf course. Originally designed by George Cobb and recently updated by Bill Bergin, the course is nestled on a level valley floor with awe-inspiring views of the majestic mountains from every hole.

Even the most serious and concentrated golfer will find it hard to ignore the awesome beauty that is native to this area.  Most avid golfers feel the breathtaking vistas and natural “surprises” at every hole actually serve to enhance the game, rather than play the role of unnecessary distractions. The front nine consists of the original 9-hole course at the Lake Toxaway Country Club, which features 6,600 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. Designed by Reg Heinitsh, it opened in 1962. The back nine is a 9-hole course designed by Kris Spence, which opened to rave reviews in 2007. Imagine enjoying the mild climates and panoramic views of the mountains while playing a round of golf, then taking an evening boat ride under a canopy of stars – life just doesn’t get much better than this.

Burlingame Country Club lies at the heart of the development and features an exquisitely appointed Clubhouse with three dining rooms and two lounges, as well as a 24-hour fitness center, top-ranked championship 18-hole golf course, four Har-Tru tennis courts and one hard court, heated swimming pool and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Real estate opportunities in Burlingame range from scenic riverfront home sites and luxury mountain view homes to rustic lodge-inspired condos that line the golf course. The private 18-hole course at Burlingame at Sapphire Lakes features 6,640 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Designed by Tom Jackson and John LaFoy, ASGCA, it opened in 1985. The expansive “rocking chair” rear porch overlooks a tranquil nature preserve, offering the peace and serenity you’ve been craving.

When you’re ready for a little adventure, Trillium offers it up in spades. The award-winning 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Morris Hatalsky, is as challenging as it is beautiful. Clinics and private lessons are available with the full-time pro on site. The less challenging par three Garden Golf course is a terrific amenity the entire family can enjoy without the worry of tee times and scorecards. A day of fishing in any one of Trillium’s stocked ponds, picnicking at the Lakeside Pavilion or playing a game of croquet on the Arbor Lawn will bring new meaning to the word “carefree.” Set at the heart of the community, Trillium’s clubhouse is an architectural masterpiece, combining mountain laurel accents with dry stacked stoned for an inspired gathering place that gives the feel of luxury housed within an old, rustic lodge. The clubhouse is an integral part of life at Trillium, offering residents casual dining in the Grille Room overlooking the 18th fairway, a wrap-around porch for world-class dining with a view and an expansive lawn for hosting special community events on holidays like Easter, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Gourmet dining is also available at The Landings, set at the tip of Lake Glenville, with opportunities for a romantic view of the sunset and dinner by candlelight. Apple Orchard Park is Trillium’s wildly popular fitness and wellness center, boasting three indoor clay tennis courts and state-of-the-art fitness equipment, as well as services like fitness classes and spa treatments. Central to it all lies Lake Glenville. Trillium has a fleet of boats available for rental – canoes, kayaks, fishing boats, deck boats, runabouts and pontoons. Water ski equipment and other water sport items are also available to rent. Terrific 1+ acre Lakefront Lot Makes its Debut with Silver Creek Real Estate Group

Over 100 years ago, Pittsburgh entrepreneur E.H. Jennings transformed the rugged terrain of a portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains into an exquisite 6.14-acre mountain lake. Today, it appears as though it has been here since the dawn of time – tranquil, majestic, and timeless. Named by its creator, Lake Toxaway was the first artificial lake built in the Appalachians. Jennings quickly began building his legacy along with the community by erecting The Toxaway Inn at the lake’s shoreline. He was certain that visitors would become as enamored with the area as he was. The Toxaway Inn quickly became a well-known retreat among the nation’s most well to do citizens, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone.

Lake CardinalWhile on vacation at Lake Toxaway, socialite and Savannah native Lucy Camp Armstrong fell in love with the area. She bought 40 acres around the lake and built an estate, lavish gardens, and riding stables. During heavy rains in the summer of 1916, the area experienced flooding and a dam gave way, emptying Lake Toxaway completely. Armstrong’s estate and the Inn held fast, but with no lake, the area soon lost its appeal for the vacationing jet set. This event eventually led to the demise of The Toxaway Inn, which stood empty for 30 years before being demolished in 1948. Ms. Armstrong remained captivated by the area, took up permanent residence at her estate, and lived long enough to see her dream realized when the lake was restored to its original beauty in the 1960s. After her death in 1970, Ms. Armstrong’s estate was transformed into The Greystone Inn, the crown jewel of the Lake Toxaway community.

Vacationing families, young professionals, and empty nesters continue to be drawn to the area just as Jennings and Armstrong once were. Today, Lake Toxaway Estates is the largest community on the lake, made up of a network of individual neighborhoods and outstanding amenities. Amenities at this premier vacation home destination include access to the state’s largest private lake, as well as the highly revered Lake Toxaway Country Club, featuring fine dining, tennis, swimming, fitness center, and golf on an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Kris Spence.

Silver Creek Real Estate Group invites you to follow in the footsteps of visionaries Jennings and Armstrong and begin building your legacy on Lake Toxaway. We are pleased to debut a delightful 1+-acre lot that features a rich bounty of Carolina hardwoods, gently rolling hills and breath-taking views of the lake and the mountains beyond. An incredible value at just $179,000, Silver Creek brokers are happy to match you with the ideal team of architects and builders to help you realize your vision of the perfect mountain retreat to fit your family’s distinctive needs and personalities. Just think – within weeks, you could begin breaking ground on a one-of-a-kind “legacy” home, a cherished heirloom property that you can enjoy with your family, then pass down from generation to generation. To become truly inspired, we invite you to join us for a personalized tour of the home site and community.
