Silver Creek Spotlight: North Carolina Art & Culture
Carolina Artist, Karen Weihs
Silver Creek Real Estate Group enjoys turning the spotlight on some of the incredible people and places that make up our wonderfully rich and unique community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. This month, we’d like to introduce our readers to a wildly talented local artist, Karen Weihs. This self-described “Colorist of the Carolinas” finds inspiration for her paintings in the varied landscapes that reach from the streets and shorelines of her beloved native Charleston, South Carolina to the majestic mountaintops of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau in North Carolina. Perhaps best known for her color-rich abstracts, her stunning landscapes and her quaint “plein air” oil paintings, Weihs’ innovative use of color and texture makes her art seem to virtually leap from the canvas. Her work graces the walls of galleries in Charleston, Asheville, Charlotte and in nearby Highlands at John Collette Fine Art. Inspired by the vision and guidance of fellow talented artists Franck Licciardi, Andrew Peters, Alan Campbell, Bill Jameson, Ann Templeton, Roberta Remy and others – Weihs now shares her craft and wisdom with others. Along with husband, restaurateur Chris Weihs – the two have hosted special Lifestyle Workshops at their Skylight Farm in Cashiers, combining creative spiritual enlightenment and art with private/group cooking classes. Karen recently released her first book, “Out of My Mind” which combines art instruction with “life lessons, business advice, and a personal journey for anyone in a creative quest.” Copies can be purchased at Progressive Galleries in Lancaster, PA, Blackbird Art or by calling (828) 226-4024. She is scheduled to appear at The Bascom Art Museum in Highlands for a book signing on Friday, May 28 at 4:30 p.m. The Bascom is also offering the following special art classes with Karen for Spring/Summer 2010:
“TRY ME OUT” Classes: May 16-17 and August 1-2, 2010
A 2 day class introducing attendees to the principles of design and oil painting with mini lectures and student hands on collaboration with the paints. Using one large collaborative canvas for everyone to make marks on with different tools, this painting will be finished by the end of the class and put on exhibit at the Bascom. This class is designed for anyone desiring to learn how to paint in oils – absolutely no experience or supplies needed. This user-friendly class is designed for fun interaction, and there will be a wine party at the end of the second day to celebrate the collaborative experience.
“STILL LIFE – OUT OF THE GARDEN” a 4-Day Oil Painting Workshop: May 25-28, 2010, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
This 4-day oil painting workshop will be themed toward painting fruits, vegetables, nests and garden-related objects for a contemporary view of still-life with a color twist. This fun class will include learning the harmonious palette that Karen is known for, her “organizing for success” theory, as well as color temperature & harmony toward strong contemporary design.
