Just a scenic three-hour drive north from the hustle and bustle of metro Atlanta’s busy streets, the historic resort mountain village of Cashiers, North Carolina offers its Southern city neighbors an abundance of natural splendor at every turn, a welcome & leisurely pace, delightfully mild climates, and a wealth of world-class amenities, shops & restaurants. What many residents from other nearby metropolises of Knoxville, Charlotte, and Greenville may not realize is that Cashiers has been a mecca for some of the Southeast’s leading interior designers for more than a decade.  As this sleepy village prepares to host its 13th Annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse, the excitement is quickly mounting!

Last year’s Designer Showhouse bore witness to record numbers in terms of attendance and fund-raising.  Proceeds from the Designer Showhouse benefit the Cashiers Historical Society, including the care and maintenance of the historic Zachary-Tolbert House and grounds.  Last year’s proceeds were so plentiful that the Society was able to turn around and donate a $28,000 grant to the Cashiers Valley Community Council. This year’s numbers are expected to be even higher. With a theme of “Designed with a View”, the 2010 Designer Showhouse is located at Whisper Fade in Cashiers’ prestigious golf community of Wade Hampton.  In a neighborhood boasting breathtaking vistas of the beautiful and highly touted Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole championship golf course and sweeping panoramas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s no wonder  why the view was the subject for this year’s theme.

With corporate sponsors such as Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, Mountainworks Custom Home Design, Hennessy Automobile Companies, and Macon Bank among others – the 2010 Cashiers Designer  Showhouse promises to be bigger and better than ever. Showcasing their talents in the individual rooms of the Cashiers Designer Showhouse are local designers Eddie Alvarez and George Oliver of A Country Home, Cheryl Benitez and Audrey Wood of Mountain House, Shannon Berrey of Shannon Berrey Designs, Nora Butler of Nora & Co., Dianne Estes of D’Estes Antiques, Debra Green of English-Green Interiors, Linda Hall of Vivace & Vivace Women, Francie Hargrove of Francie Hargrove Interior Design, Sandy Linebaugh of Fiddlehead Designs, Edwin Lusk and David Paterson of Fletcher & Lee, Lynn Monday of Monday’s House of Design, Kirk Moore & Don Fry of Oakleaf Flower & Garden, Ann Sherrill of Rusticks, and Matthew Ward of Into the Woods Interiors. Visiting designers from nearby Atlanta and Birmingham are Carole Weaks of C. Weaks Interiors, William Peace of Peace Design, Suzanne Kasler of Suzanne Kasler Interiors, Bob Brown of Robert Brown Interior Design, and Majorie Johnston and Wendy Barze of Marjorie Johnston & Co. Atlanta Designer, Suzanne Kasler was named among Elle Décor’s Top 25 Designers this year, and she will be featured during a Talk, Lunch & Book Signing at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley on Saturday, August 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tickets to tour the rooms of this exquisitely designed luxury mountain estate are just $25 per person and can be purchased at the Showhouse.  If you wish to order your tickets in advance, please call 828.743.7710.  The hours of the Showhouse are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event kicks off with a Patrons Party & Auction on the evening of Friday, August 20 at the Wade Hampton Golf Clubhouse, which will feature the culinary artistry of Wade Hampton Chef Doug Sampey and live entertainment from Anita Brown and her Band. Throughout the Showhouse Event, the Cashiers Historical Society Museum in the Zachary-Tolbert House & Grounds will be open daily for tours, and the venues surrounding the Showhouse will include the Showhouse Shops and Merchants Tent. A delicious lunch from Café 107 will be served daily at the Dowden Pavilion. Shuttles to the Cashiers Designer Showhouse will leave regularly from the parking lot of the Cashiers United Methodist Church.

The friendly folks at Silver Creek Real Estate Group invite you to join us for this wonderful annual event in support of a very good cause.  Take a daytrip or plan an entire weekend in the mountains and catch a glimpse into the luxury lifestyle that is synonymous with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.  When you’re not touring the Showhouse, relaxing days of boating our mountains lakes, fly fishing in our abundant streams, shooting a perfect game on our golf courses, or kicking back and doing nothing at all await you. Visit the Silver Creek website to check out our list of shops, restaurants and accommodation options.  We also encourage you to take a look around at some of the incredible homes for sale all along the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.  After you’ve had a chance to tour the Showhouse and fall madly in love with the area – we’d love to take you on a tour of some of the available homes and land around Highlands, Cashiers, Sapphire Valley, and Lake Toxaway and Glenville. Silver Creek welcomes your call at 828-743-1999 or please feel free to drop by our offices located near the Cashiers Crossroads in the Shoppes at Creekside.  We look forward to seeing YOU up on the mountain!

Silver Creek Spotlight: The Waterfalls of Western North Carolina

Florida has its sandy beaches and swaying palms, Georgia has its gently rolling hills and meandering rivers, South Carolina has its palmettos and oak trees draped with Spanish Moss, and North Carolina has its sweeping mountain panoramas and unparalleled Autumns bursting with color. Many would argue that the Southeastern United States is one of the most beautiful regions of the world – some for the sights that are laid out right before your eyes, and some for the hidden treasures – tucked away from the world down a winding, tree-lined hiking trail. Western North Carolina is the source for a veritable bounty of majestic waterfalls concealed in seemingly ancient forests, swathed in both mist and mysticism. The sound of a cascading waterfall immediately puts all within earshot at ease, while the sight of one of these incredible riches fills one with the notion that they are experiencing something that very few people have shared. They are a part of our history, flowing from a place in time, cut through the rocky surface of a mountain face – powerful and enchanting all at once. Silver Creek Real Estate Group wants to shine the spotlight on a handful of these hidden gems – if you have an opportunity to visit our unique slice of Heaven, we highly recommend you add one or more of these amazing sights to your list of things to see and do during your next trip to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

Whitewater Falls

1. Rainbow Falls:  Known as the Niagara of North Carolina, this spectacular nine-story waterfall with a 125-foot drop is located in the Nantahala National Forest along the Horsepasture River. It is accessible by way of a strenuous 1.5 mile hike from adjacent Gorges State Park on Highway 64, which encompasses more than 7,000 acres of forest, more than 20 miles of rivers and creeks, more than 45 rare plant and animals species, and over a dozen waterfalls.  Hikers should be prepared to park in the Grassy Ridge parking area and cross two streams to get there.

2. Turtleback Falls: An easy five-minute walk upstream from Rainbow Falls leads you to this wide and exciting 10-foot drop. A popular “ride” for locals and visitors alike, waterfall jumpers should always exercise extreme caution as the river currents have been known to pull swimmers downstream toward the treacherous drop at Rainbow Falls.  Tragically, three lives have been lost here since 2003. Regardless of whether you view these falls from the shoreline or from the water, it is a beautiful sight to behold.

3. Dry Falls: Located 3.2 miles north of Highlands along Highway 64, this aptly titled 75-foot cascade provides plenty of space for people to walk behind it without getting wet. The United States Forestry Service provides parking and a paved trail leading to the falls.

4. Bridal Veil Falls: A little over .5 miles south of Dry Falls, Bridal Veil provides an impressive graceful 120-foot drop that falls over an old portion of U.S. 64. Travelers can actually drive BEHIND the falls – making for an incredible photo op. Bridal Veil Falls enjoyed its fifteen minutes of fame when it was featured in the 1992 film Last of the Mohicans.

5. Toxaway Falls: This winding 250-foot cascade is easy to view from several angles on Highway 64 East near Lake Toxaway where the river passes under a bridge and over a cliff.

6. Whitewater Falls:  Perhaps the most famous waterfall in the area, this dramatic cascade drops over 400 feet – making it the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. Located 15 minutes from Cashiers, Whitewater Falls can be accessed by way of N.C. 281 South – 8 miles beyond the Gorges State Park entrance. Visitors should be prepared to pay a $2 vehicle fee, but it’s well-worth the price of admission to view this natural wonder.  A paved walkway leads to the falls, and a 12-story climb down leads to an observation platform for the most striking view of the waterfall.

With more than 300 known waterfalls across the state, it would be impossible to name them all here. We invite you to come discover a few of your own!  While you’re here, Silver Creek Real Estate Group can even help you find a one-of-a-kind property with a waterfall in your very own backyard.  To begin your quest for the ideal lot complete with cascading falls, contact the dedicated team of Silver Creek brokers by calling us TODAY at 828-743-1999, emailing us at info@ncliving.com, or filling out our online contact form.  If you’re in the neighborhood and need us to point you in the direction of some of the region’s most remarkable waterfalls, stop by our offices in the heart of Cashiers in The Shoppes at CreekSide, next to Wendy’s Restaurant. We look forward to meeting YOU!

One of the best things about life on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau – besides the warm and welcoming community and wealth of natural splendor as far as the eye can see – are our mild year-round temperatures. While tourists are breaking a sweat throughout most of the steamy South, visitors to Cashiers, Highlands, Sapphire Valley, Lake Toxaway and Lake Glenville enjoy average temperatures of just 78 degrees in July – our hottest month of the year. Although temperatures don’t have far to climb in The Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, things are really heating up on our calendar of events! July brings three exciting festivals to the mountains – celebrating gardens, music and art respectively – and much, much more. Silver Creek Real Estate Group invites YOU to join us up on the mountain this July. For a list of great places to stay and fun things to do here, we welcome you to take a leisurely tour of our website at www.ncliving.com. In the event that you happen across a listing or two that catches your eye, we invite you to call us at 828-743-1999, e-mail us at info@ncliving.com or drop by our offices in the heart of Cashiers in the Shoppes at CreekSide and we’ll take you on a customized tour of this unique slice of Heaven! Smokey Joe’s Café features nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded including hits such as “On Broadway,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,”“Stand By Me,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Love Potion #9”and “I’m A Woman.” With each song becoming a trip down the corridors of American culture, Smokey Joe’s Café transforms classic pop music into compelling musical theatre. Smokey Joe’s Café was nominated for seven Tony Awards  and the Original Broadway cast soundtrack, Smokey Joe’s Café:  The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller won a Grammy award in 1995. Reminiscent of an old French village during the impressionist period, plein air artists can be found painting at easels all around town throughout the week. The festival culminates with a full day of live music, art demonstrations, competitions, children’s art activities, food, an unveiling of a new sculpture exhibition on the Green and a final awards ceremony with cocktails to celebrate all of the paintings of this beautiful area produced throughout the festival. A portion of the proceeds from “Arts on the Green” will benefit The Village Green – a conservancy project and community park that is supported solely through private donations, fundraising and corporate sponsorships. Our very own Jochen Lucke, owner of Silver Creek Real Estate Group proudly serves as President of the Village Green. He personally invites you and your family to join us on the mountain for this not-to-be-missed event.  If you are not an art lover when you arrive, you will be when you leave!

While life in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina is a celebration of nature’s splendor year-round – there is perhaps no season more stunning and WELCOME than Spring on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. With Winter’s snowfall and April’s showers now a distant memory – May holds the promise of bright blue skies for miles, a rolling sea of fragrant wildflowers along the valley floor, and the much-anticipated return of some of our favorite family-friendly events!
