The Highlands-Cashiers Plateau is well known for its stunning natural beauty – its “far as the eye can see” vistas, its larger than life waterfalls, its rolling sea of wildflowers lining the valley floor. In a show of celebration of nature’s beauty, the Highlands, NC community prepares to kick off its 11th Annual Mountains in Bloom Garden Festival. Nature lovers throughout the Southeast and beyond will soon descend upon the Plateau for a weekend they won’t soon forget!

The Festival kicks off with a series of lectures, the first of which – “Flower Remedies: Take Two Roses and Call Me In the Morning” – will be hosted at The Bascom and presented by Margie Shambaugh at 5:30 p.m. on July 7. Subsequent lectures will be held on July 9 and include the professional advice of famed interior designer, Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill and landscape designer/garden restorer, Chip Callaway. This exceptional afternoon – hosted at The Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center – is broken into two sessions (8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.), and includes a book signing and a proper English tea at Café Royal.

The Flower Show – held at Highlands Civic Center on July 10 and 11 – showcases three divisions: Horticulture (garden flowers, container plants & native specimens), Artistic (floral arrangements, floral design interpretations of Bascom artwork, children’s floral arrangements) and – NEW this year – Photography (flowers of all kinds and Western North Carolina scenery). The theme of this year’s show is “Mountain Moments” and will include two special exhibits, The Art of Ikebana and Art Projects from The Bascom’s Children’s Program. The Flower Show begins July 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and wraps up July 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fun doesn’t have to end there! Also hosted at the Highlands Civic Center on July 10 and 11 in the Gymnasium is the much anticipated Home and Garden Shop. Featured for the first time, this exciting attraction is expected to be the highlight of the weekend. Come shop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. among the vendors and artists presenting live plants, flowers and specialty items for the home and garden, including garden art, birdbaths, pottery, fountains, garden furniture and so much more.

On July 10 and 11, The Garden Tour commences with a leisurely shuttle ride from The Highlands Civic Center. The Tour includes the majestic gardens and beautiful interiors of some of the homes in Highlands Falls Country Club, as well as the gardens of an English country estate and a 1800’s historic home. Lunch will be provided at the Highlands Falls Clubhouse, overlooking the 17th hole and lake. The Festival also includes a Patron’s Party on July 10 at 6:30 p.m. hosted by Paula and Barry Jones – the owners of The Summerhouse – at their lovely Frog Pond Farm. This extraordinary evening will include a meander through the gardens, cocktails by the lake, and the music of Jim Gibson and his strolling musicians as guests dine under a blanket of stars.
